The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization governed by volunteers, which provides services that help individuals and families prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Your local ARC responds to all disasters, from house fires or wildfires, to earthquakes, with emergency shelter and other basic needs. First aid, CPR, water safety and many other health and safety classes are available. Many local nonprofit organizations and community events benefit from hundreds of volunteer manhours provided by the American Red Cross Youth Group.

The Battle Mountain Family Resource Center’s mission is to strengthen families through resources, referrals, education, and support. This is done through case managers who work with each family to meet their needs and help them reach their goals. For those caring for loved ones with health issues that make 24 hour care a necessity but are not in need of full-time nursing home care, the day care offers the family a respite opportunity. Staffed by nursing and recreation professionals, adults in need of supervision can be a participant for one hour or seven, and find education, recreation, nutrition and support while their family takes an opportunity to care of themselves.

The Carlin Senior Citizen Center offers assistance to senior citizens within the city of Carlin. Major assistance is in the form of nutrition and transportation. The nutrition program provides meals to congregate and home-bound participants five days a week for a total of 260 meals a week. The transportation program provides rides to and from the nutrition site, as well as a weekly trip to and from Elko. Occasionally, trips are made to Twin Falls, Idaho for shopping, etc.

The purpose of the Committee Against Domestic Violence is to prevent and eliminate domestic violence and sexual assault through direct services to victims, education and prevention. Direct services include crisis intervention, peer counseling, advocacy, group meetings and shelter. CADV provides ourteach services in Lander County. All direct services are provided at Harbor House (CADV’s 28 bed safe house for all victims of Northeastern Nevada). CADV’s Harbor House provides a safe, homelike atmosphere free of charge to victims of domestic violence. Throughout the continuum of CADV services, the first priority is to keep the victim safe.

The mission of CIS is to champion the connection of needed community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school, and prepare for life. By bringing caring adults into the schools to address children’s unmet needs, CIS provides the link between educators and the community. The result: teachers are free to teach, and students--many in jeopardy of dropping out -- have the opportunity to focus on learning. CIS initiatives address hunger prevention, early childhood education, mentoring, health and wellness, mental health outreach, and career preparation. These projects are sustained by generous community and government partnerships, corporate donations, grants, gifts and contributions.

The Elko Senior Center provides nutritious meals to Elko area senior citizens in a positive environment with the congregate/on-site dining and Meals on Wheels for the homebound. Seniors who participate report enhancements to their health and well-being as they also are offered access to a wide variety of community health and social service programs at the Elko facility.

The Family Resource Center of Northeastern Nevada’s Family Advocacy program is designed to provide education, support, resources and referrals to families to promote self-sufficiency, plus promote the safety of our community’s children. Their Hispanic Services Program provides resources, referrals, and language support for Hispanic families who need interpretation to communicate. The Head Start program is a holistic agency focusing on education, nutrition, health, safety, social-emotional needs, and supporting families in goal attainment. FRCNEN’s Car Seat program makes 5-point child car seats affordable for low-income families, and teaches the proper installation of car seats.
Family Stability Council

The Family Stability Council is an informal group of community leaders focused on reducing poverty and improving the lives of individuals and families in Humboldt County. Their three primary areas of focus are: 1) no child hungry, 2) a place to stay for everyone, and 3) expanded mental health services. Using collaboration and innovation, the Family Stability Council’s members combine resources to generate new programs to address these three areas of need. Programs are funded by various grants, public entities, corporate supporters, and private donations. The United Way of the Great Basin acts as fiscal agent for the Family Stability Council, providing 501(c)3 status and bookkeeping services.

FISH provides basic human needs to people who are suffering from a temporary or emergency crisis and cannot currently provide for themselves. Services include food, clothing, shelter, fuel/oil, transportation to the nearest shelter, laundry, showers, hot meals in the soup kitchen, medical assistance, and licensing to procure employment. Samaritan House is a newly-opened facility that provides emergency shelter for 16-20 people per night on a year-round basis. Through compassionate service, we strive toward a goal of renewed hope, dignity and self-sufficiency for all.

Horizon Hospice’s mission is to provide support to terminally ill patients and their families, and to improve their quality of life. Staffed by volunteers, they provide compassionate, non-medical care for clients who choose to die at home, and support for their family members. Additionally, they provide bereavement support to survivors, buddy bears to grieving children and adolescents, pain management education to practitioners and caregivers, and funding to provide financial assistance to help pay for pain medication for those who cannot afford it.

Humboldt Volunteer Hospice provides physical, emotional and psycho-spiritual support for terminally ill patients and their families. Their scope has expanded to providing the facilitation of grief support groups.

Nevada Cancer Institute offers personalized assistance to cancer patients and their families. It provides support for financial, psychosocial and comfort items and helps cancer patients and their families learn about the disease, treatment options, survivorship, clinical trials and any other relevant issues. United Way funds help qualified cancer patients and their care givers with travel costs to whichever cancer treatment center they are using. In addition, Nevada Cancer Institute focuses on early detection and prevention of cancer by promoting and providing information on wellness programs, healthy lifestyle choices, screening guidelines and screening referrals.

Nevada Health Center operates the Carlin Clinic and the Elko Medical Clinic and Dental Clinic, which is one of the few medical facilities accepting Medicaid patients. They also oversee the Miles for Smiles Dental Van for service to children throughout Humboldt and Lander Counties. Low cost services are available including prescription assistance.

RSVP programs are designed to help seniors remain independent and live in their own homes with dignity and grace for as long as possible, rather than be prematurely institutionalized. RSVP’s Home Companion Program utilizes volunteers to provide basic, everyday services for low-income and homebound seniors in need of companionship, transportation to medical appointments, to pick up prescriptions or to go grocery shopping. RSVP’s Resistance Training Exercise Program helps seniors gain and retain strength, flexibility and mobility. With RSVP’s Lifeline service, emergency help is just minutes away by pushing a button on a necklace or bracelet. The CARE Law program provides pro bono legal services for low-income and homebound seniors who are otherwise unable to access legal assistance.

Wells Family Resource Center exists to provide an open center to meet the needs of children/parents/families. The Wells community has no other open forum where they can go to seek assistance, help, support or referral to other resources. In addition, the Wells Family Resource Center’s After School Connection program for elementary age children operates four days a week throughout the school year, giving children a safe and fun environment with a variety of different activities. “Steps for Success” is a new program intended to prepare 4- and 5-year-olds for kindergarten. “Early Steps to Learning” helps 2- and 3-year-olds with peer socialization, improves language and communication skills and provides a smooth separation from parents into an environment that supports children’s learning through their natural instinct of exploration.

Operated by the United Way of the Great Basin since March 1, 2008, the Winnemucca Food Bank provides nutritional food to low-income individuals and families in need. In addition to providing emergency transportation, shelter and other basic needs to people in crisis, their emergency assistance program helps clients with lodging, prescriptions, gas to work or to search for work, and utility costs when unforeseen hardships arise in their lives. The new thrift store not only helps support the organization’s programs, but also provides free clothing and basic household items to those in need.

Their adult mentors spend quality time with the teens, encouraging open communication and healthy decisions.
